LOVE AND THE HEART
Have you ever ponder
why the shape of the heart is used as the symbol of love?
If yes, may be your
ans
wer(s) is/are as good as mine. The heart is unarguably the most important
organ in the body. The heart is the source of life. Sitting within the thoracic
cavity and made up of striated cardiac muscles. The heart works from birth to
death in every individual beating at an average of 72 per minute. Deviations
from this apart from under some circumstances like sports, anxiety etc. will
definitely be a problem.
Here are the interesting facts!
The heart
pumps about 5000mL (5 Ltr) of blood via each of the ventricles. Oxygenated
blood through the left ventricle and deoxygenated blood through the right
ventricle. The blood from the L V goes into the systemic circulation while that from the R V goes into the pulmonary circulation (for it to be
oxygenated in the lungs). The 5 Liters of blood pumped into the systemic
circulation carries oxygen to various cells and tissues of the body, supply
nutrients to them, carry toxic substances and metabolic wastes to excretory
organs among other functions.
Here is how the 5 Liters of
oxygenated blood pumped by the heart per minute are used according to Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology:
the skeletal muscles make use of 21%, brain 13%, skin 9%,
gastro-intestinal tract 24%, kidneys 19%,
the rest of the body 10% while the heart itself makes use of just 4%.
Did
you know?
v That the heart cells will begin to die if oxygen supply is cut off for
more than 30 seconds.
